Parent Training Session – Experiencing Learning Through a Child's Perspective

Ms.Berlin Noronha

The Pre-primary section organised an enriching Parent Training Session designed to provide parents with an authentic insight into the classroom learning experience. The session offered parents a unique opportunity to step into their children's shoes by actively participating as students, allowing them to gain a deeper appreciation of the teaching learning process.

Throughout the session, the teachers conducted the class exactly as they would with the children. Parents were guided solely through verbal instructions and demonstrations, and were required to listen attentively, follow directions precisely, and complete worksheets independently. This immersive approach enabled parents to experience first-hand the importance of attentive listening, comprehension, sequencing of instructions, and independent task completion skills that are consistently nurtured in the classroom.

The primary objective of the session was to familiarise parents with the instructional strategies employed by the teachers and to provide clarity on the expectations placed upon children during regular classroom activities and evaluations. By experiencing these activities, themselves, parents developed a greater understanding of the cognitive and behavioural skills that are assessed beyond academic knowledge.

Recognising that assessments can often be a source of anxiety for both parents and children, the session served to demystify the evaluation process. It offered valuable insights into how children are guided, observed, and assessed in a supportive learning environment, thereby enabling parents to prepare their children more effectively while fostering confidence, independence, and a positive attitude towards learning.

The session was both engaging and insightful, further strengthening the collaborative partnership between parents and teachers in nurturing each child's holistic development and lifelong love for learning.
