“Celebrating the Spirit of Freedom – 79th Independence Day”
“Freedom is the soul of every country, the breath of life to every nation.”— Rabindranath Tagore
The 79th Independence Day of our nation was celebrated with great enthusiasm and pride at Don Bosco Primary School, Matunga on 13th August in Fr. Joseph Casti Hall. The event was vibrant and colourful, filled with cultural performances, inspiring speeches, and meaningful learning experiences.
The programme began with a warm welcome to the distinguished guests, Rev. Fr. Orville Coutinho, Head Teacher, Teachers, PTA member, SMC member and students. The lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest symbolised the victory of light over darkness and the pursuit of knowledge and hope. This was followed by a heartfelt prayer, seeking blessings for peace and prosperity in the nation.
A student then presented a patriotic poem that stirred feelings of pride and gratitude towards our motherland. The words of the poem reminded everyone of the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and the responsibility we have to protect our freedom. This was followed by an energetic dance performance by the students of Standard IV, celebrating India’s culture, unity, and courage.
A special highlight of the day was the Cultural Diversity Walk, where the students of Standard I showcased the traditional attire of different states of India. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, each student proudly represented their state and spoke about its culture, history, and uniqueness. This beautiful segment reminded everyone of India’s strength in its “Unity in Diversity.”
An inspiring speech on patriotism was delivered, emphasising our duty as citizens to contribute to the nation’s progress. The Chief Guest’s address further motivated the students to work hard, uphold moral values, and be proud of our cultural heritage.
The celebration also included a PowerPoint Presentation for the students, explaining the meaning of Independence, its historical importance, and how it is celebrated nationwide. They learned about freedom fighters, the Red Fort celebrations, and various cultural traditions across the country. This was followed by a worksheet activity to reinforce their understanding.
The message was clear—freedom is a precious gift that must be valued and safeguarded. Students were encouraged to respect the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and to contribute positively to society.
The celebrations continued on 15th August with the flag hoisting ceremony and assembly. As the tricolour was unfurled, everyone stood proudly and sang the National Anthem, feeling a deep sense of unity and national pride.
The candidates who enrolled for the literacy programme were awarded certificates issued by the Government marking a proud moment in their lives. They showed their appreciation towards all the teachers who helped them during the past two years. With hearts filled with gratitude, they also acknowledged the unwavering support of the management members, whose encouragement made this success possible. As expressed by Mrs. Kashmira Rodrigues “When we teach someone to read, we open the door to endless possibilities and lifelong freedom.”
The event concluded with a vote of thanks to all who contributed to its success. This Independence Day celebration was not just an occasion to remember the past but also an opportunity to inspire the future generation to be responsible, patriotic citizens.
The celebration filled every heart with pride, gratitude, and unity. It reminded us that freedom is a gift earned through sacrifice and must be honoured through our actions. Truly, “A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” — Mahatma Gandhi.
