The vocation team meets our senior Catholic students online
-Ms Jansi Dharamraj
A virtual session on vocation for the students of std-10 was conducted on 5th November, 2020 at 9:15 am. Fr Bernard Fernandes, the principal, Mrs Christina Mascarenhas, the A.H.M, Mrs Reshma Belgoankar, 9th,10th Supervisor,Mrs Janet D’
Souza, Mrs Perpetual Nazareth, and the vocation team members Fr Velsali, Ms Elizabeth, and Ms Jansi were present for the meeting.
The resource people for the session were Fr. Blany D’Souza, Fr. Velasli Bandya, Fr. Bosco Carvalho (ex-student of Don Bosco, Matunga), aspirants Joshua Ferrao and Mark Fernandes. The meeting began with a short prayer by Mrs Elizabeth Soares followed by the introduction of the resource people by Fr Velsali who also gave a gist of the entire programme planned for the day.
Fr. Blany D’ Souza began his talk by throwing light on the Christian faith. He also mentioned that ‘As Light and darkness cannot go together, so too God and sin cannot be equated together.’ Every Christian is called to live a holy life. One has to be pure, obedient to God and avail of the sacrament of confession. God’s plan for us is that not only that we go to heaven alone, but we take along people around us too. Fr. Blany gave an example of how God called Moses to fulfil His plan. Moses gave excuses as to why God should not choose him. God doesn’t make a mistake when he chooses someone. Father mentioned that our life is a gift from God so we need to give our best to Him. God can also choose a weak vessel like St John Marie Vianney who was considered worthless by the world yet precious in the eyes of God. God is a lover of broken people, whom he mends and uses them for the other broken hearts. God wants us to lead people to heaven, our eternal home. Christianity in a nutshell as per John 3:16- “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Next, Fr. Velsali explained in brief how we as Christians are called by God to do His will. We all need to respond to God’s call whether being single, married or as religious. As far as vocation is considered, a priest is called to be close to God, bringing people close to God and bringing God close to people. We are set apart to do the will of God by serving Him with our heart mind and soul as mentioned in Matthew 22:37- “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
There were two aspirants to the priesthood who shared with us their life experiences. Master Joshua Ferrao highlighted Mark 8:36- “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” He said that this scripture verse was the only reason for him joining priesthood. Being a part of Don Bosco Institute in Dubai, Joshua accepted God’s call and ventured into the Salesian family to serve God and His people.
Master Mark Fernandes a student of Don Bosco, Lonavala, too shared his story of answering God’s call. Accepting challenges in life and responding to it positively helped him come closer to God. Mark mentioned that when one places his hand in God’s hand, God surely takes care of him as Leviticus 19:2 says, “Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.”
Fr. BoscoCarvalho, an ex-student of Don Bosco Matunga, was happy to be back, to see his teachers virtually. He shared his experience on how he responded to God’s call in spite of his other ambitions in life. He insisted that the students be open to God’s call for one’s life as God’s plans are always the best plan for each one of us. When God calls you to do His work; be assured that He will take care of you and your work too. As in Jeremiah 29:11 God says, For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Our school Principal, Fr. Bernard Fernandes expressed his sincere thanks to the resource people for their presentation of a vocation and God’s will in our lives. Father also thanked the Vocation team and the teachers for organizing this short programme for our senior Catholic students.
A short interactive session was held where the students could get an answer to their queries.
The programme concluded at 10:15am.
