SYMBIOS – A Salesian Youth MovementMs.

Elizabeth Soares

The 9th of Dec. 2017 was indeed a very meaningful day for the Salesian family here at Don Bosco Campus, being the venue for the Salesian Youth Movement of the Mumbai Region. The theme of the program was ‘Nurturing Lives Significantly’. The theme helped the youth of the present times to realize the need for good health and holiness as individuals to help everyone live in harmony.

The day began with the registration at the DBIS grounds and was followed with breakfast for the students at 8 am. We had 30 students representing the three standards 8th, 9th and 10th of our school. The students from the different Salesian schools of the Mumbai region were divided into groups – Health, Holiness and Harmony. The programme began with a short prayer service in the Bianchi hall. Thereafter the inaugural address was given by Fr.Brian Moras. He presented the theme effectively and introduced the students to the Salesian Youth Movement call. The students responded enthusiastically to the yell and sang the theme song.
The team of animators performed a great job helping to organise presentations, ice-breakers, mixers, facilitate discussions, synthesize the inputs, animate action songs and look into the arrangement of logistics. The students were encouraged to exchange souvenirs in order to make the meet meaningful and memorable. The sessions animated by the resource persons were very informative and lively. They helped bring about an awareness of the present needs of modern day youth. The youth were made to realize that Don Bosco institutions have marvellous grounds and that we need to utilize these facilities in order to take care of our health. A healthy mind will respect culture, religions and languages. This will in turn bring harmony of body and mind. Holiness will help build a strong bond of faith and trust in God and towards our fellow brethren. Harmony brings peace in the society.

The educative sessions on health helped the students realize the need to pay attention to health and to become aware of infections transmitted due to tranfusion of blood from blood banks. The session on ‘the lion and sheep’ made the youth realize that we need to change our destructive response and instead adopt a strategy that is calm and peaceful.
The lunch break added energy to take up the post lunch activities viz. preparing banners, best out of waste, rangoli and clay modelling. These activities made the afternoon come alive. The zumba session was indeed thrilling. The students joyfully grooved to the music. Thereafter Fr. McEnroe spelled the meaning of SYMBIOS in the Salesian youth movement that means giving life. The 4 elements of this movement are -sense of God, people who share joy and optimism and doing your ordinary things in an extraordinary way. The youth are called to give a total -social and political – commitment. Like Don Bosco the Salesians wish to give life to the young people. He thanked  God for giving this Symbios. He also thanked the Provincial, Fr.Glen, Fr.Lloyd and Fr.Leon, the Rectors ,Principals and the DBYC staff for the excellent coordination and support extended to make this programme a great success.
The teachers and coordinators representing the various schools were felicitated.  Fr. McEnroe extended a warm welcome for the next Symbios programme to take place during the Rector Major’s visit in 2019 at the Province level.
The programme concluded with the theme song and a photography session with the participating schools.
