MR vaccination in school
-Ms. Arnaaz Nariman
The Measles-Rubella (MR)campaign was initiated by the government, and taken forward by the Education department. Workshops were conducted by the Education department to create an awareness related to the MR campaign and these were attended by our staff representatives of the Primary and the Secondary section in September 2018. Dr. Nilesh Gaikwad and team authorized by the government to visit schools in this regard, addressed the PTA executive body meetings of the Primary and the Secondary sections on 17th Oct 2018 to take this campaign forward.
Following were some salient points related to the campaign:
1. MR campaign is a campaign of the Govt. of India to control/eradicate the spread of measles and rubella by 2020.
2. MR campaign concerns children from 9 months to 15 years. Every child needs to be vaccinated in this age group.
3. Since this age group is mainly present in the schools, the government proposes to carry out this campaign through the schools.
4. The school needs to create an awareness of this campaign among its stakeholders.
The videos promoting the MR campaign and spreading its awareness, sent by the Ed. Department were shared with the parents by the staff and respective PTA members.
On 7th December2018 MR vaccination camp was conducted in the school premises in their respective sections for classes Jr.Kg to class 10 from 9.30 am -1.00 pm. There was the presence of WHO group members and BMC representative to vaccinate each child (who opted for this vaccination on the campus) with help of school staff members. Each child was then provided a vaccine card to take back home. All details were placed on records and the same were submitted to the Education department and BMC. A similar exercise was repeated on 12th Jan 2019 for those students who had opted for the vaccination in the school but couldn’t avail of the facility on the assigned due to absence or involvement in inter-school programs. 2012 students i.e.76.64 % availed of this camp on the school campus.
