Fun with Fractions
-Ms. Janessa Monteiro
‘Good Mathematics is not about how many answers you know. It’s about how you behave when you don’t know’.
The above quote helps in explaining the concepts in Math can be made simple, easy and interesting when taught and explained with the help of day to day activities. This also takes away fright from an individual. To make Math more enjoyable, students had fun with fraction day on December 10, 2018 in Don Bosco Primary School, Matunga. Display of charts and pictures in the classrooms and corridors provided information about fractions. An interactive discussion was held by the class teacher together with an interesting video aided comprehension. The teacher also used concrete objects to simplify the concept.
The students carried snacks such as sandwich, pizza etc. in their tiffin-these were cut in pieces of half, quarter, three quarter etc. ‘I love math and it was fun for me to identify fractions. I was given an opportunity to write on the blackboard’ says Anakin Lalwani. Later the students shared these snacks among themselves.
At the end of the day, there was a better and clearer understanding of the concept of fractions by the students. This was reflected in the quick and confident completion of the worksheet on fractions provided to them.
