Independence Days symbolise a time to reaffirm our pride in being Indians, at the same time it calls for a moment of reflection on the daunting problems and our determination to surmount them.

The 70th anniversary of our Independence was celebrated with much fanfare on 15th August in Don Bosco High School, Matunga. The occasion was marked with solemnity when the school sang ‘Jana Gana Mana’ as the flag hoisted by the parents of our SSC topper Master Aman Singh fluttered atop the mast. An impressive guard of honour was given by the NCC, RSP and Scout troupes to the guests.

Against the backdrop theme ‘Free Your Minds’ the class 8D reminded all that Freedom is a divinely designed right and we first need to free our minds from the shackles of social evils that dominate our society. They further encouraged everyone to view our Fundamental Rights as given in our Constitution with a little foresight, putting forth a very pertinent thought “If our basic rights are chained up and bound, can we find true freedom?”

The historic mood and importance of the day was beautifully captured and portrayed in song, dance and a display of our great leaders and freedom fighters. Rector Rev. Fr. Crispino D’souza in his message said, “Freedom comes with responsibility and not just doing what we want.” He recited a verse which made all present reflect on whether we are really free after 70 years of Independence.

The honouring of our SSC toppers made one and all present feel proud and left the audience awe-stricken at their achievements. Mrs. Preeti Singh, mother of our SSC topper thanked the school and his teachers for all their support and contribution in the all round development of her son.

The programme concluded with the Principal Rev. Fr. Bernard Fernandes congratulating the SSC toppers and also appreciating class 8D for their passion and enthusiasm while preparing the assembly. “It was a team effort,” he said.
