Clearing misconceptions on human sexuality
-Std IX Student reporters

Sex even though a taboo in India, has been effectively addressed in institutions and home to place before children and youngsters a mature approach towards love. Don Bosco High School, Matunga too has taken a bold step in this direction by conducting seminars for the senior students of the school over the years. This academic year, the session ‘Education to love’ was conducted for the students of Std IX division-wise over two days, 6th and 7th Aug 2018. The session was conducted by Dr. Enit Miranda Prabhu along with Fr. Stephen Fernandes on day one, and with Dr. Rouen Mascarenhas on the second day.
The session included inputs on one’s unique identity and difference. With the aid of a power point presentation on human anatomy, human sexuality was discussed and the uniqueness of male and female was highlighted. The presentation on human sexuality emphasized the importance of sex education in this changing and fast paced world.
The students were also encouraged to discover their secret qualities and become explorers. The teenagers were informed about the physical and emotional changes they undergo during adolescence. They were also guided not to think about what others perceive them to be. They were taken through topics on building self-esteem, peer pressure, self-confidence and self-control which are relevant and significant for every teenager.
There was a focus on learning about true relationships. Lighter moments during the sessions and a participatory atmosphere with questions and answers helped to keep the audience engaged but not awkward which they usually felt with parents. Misconceptions about physical intimacy were successfully dispelled.
The boys left the room transformed and mature.
