Celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary of the Mahatma
– Ms. Tejashree Vesvikar
The Government of India planned to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Nation, at the national and international level to propagate his message of truth and non-violence Satya and Ahimsa. On this occasion, the Primary Section of Don Bosco High School, Matunga organized a programme on the school campus on February 12, 2020. The students of the primary section and their teachers gathered in the undercroft to be a part of the assembly.
The morning assembly began with the garlanding of the photo frame of Gandhiji by Master Pushkal, a student of Std. II to give honour and respect to Mahatma Gandhi. The students were attentive and absorbed the life story of Bapu’s childhood narrated by Mrs. Radha, a teacher of the school. The students learnt the values of honesty, integrity and sincerity through this story. The children realized that Honesty is the Best Policy when Mrs. Radha explained the meaning of these three values and their importance in our life.
The students of Std. 3D and Std. 4D performed a skit that helped our young audience to understand the virtues of Gandhiji. It also helped to create an awareness of a peaceful co-existence between both humans and the environment. Mahatma Gandhi being an environmentalist had himself motivated the youth to keep their surroundings clean, to stop the wastage of resources and to save the trees. This skit made a deep impact on the young minds and left them thinking how to help the needy and downtrodden with necessary resources and to uplift them in society.
Master Rushaan of Std.3 D sang “VaishanavJaan To TeneKahiye..”, Gandhiji’s favourite hymn in a melodious voice to spread the message of equality and to perceive the good in others.
After the morning assembly, the students marched around the school campus holding banners and placards raising slogans on anti –tobacco and anti gutka to create public awareness on the adverse effects of these.
The students participated in a Quiz conducted in every class on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Information about infectious diseases like Leprosy and Tuberculosis was imparted through a power point presentation followed by a quiz.
It was a day well spent learning about Gandhiji and imbibing the values he has for each of us.
