Bosco Kala Utsav-A Magical Melange of Talent
-Mrs. Perpetual Nazareth

Inter house Competitions offer a chance for students to gain substantial experience, showcase skills, analyse and evaluate outcomes, and unwrap individual aptitudes. Don Bosco High School, Matunga has set the benchmark for conducting activities for students to enjoy and learn a great deal. One such event is the blue riband event of the academic year, the Bosco Kala Utsav festival. This festival was celebrated on Thursday, 30 Aug 2018 at different venues on the school campus with an abundance of activities-debate, singing, art, quiz, elocution and spell bee.
Debate allows students room for creativity, expression and strategizing. The length and breadth of knowledge gained is unparalleled. At the debate held on Bosco Kalautsav, speakers from Yellow and Green House argued for the motion while the Blue and Red House against the motion on the topic ‘Digital India-A Boon’. The teams were well prepared and the various debating skills of the speakers viz, tone, diction, overstatement, rhetoric, irony etc. to convince the audience were on display. The debaters exhibited confidence and presented statistics and validated data in presenting their arguments before the audience and a panel of eminent jury members, that included Mrs. Parvinder Kaur, a Professor from the neighbouring College. Impressed with the thinking ability of the students, Mrs. Parvinder called for a greater exposure to debates to enhance wider reflection. “I would like Don Bosco students to interact with Khalsa College students at debates, plays, filmmaking programs,” she said. “In this way they will be exposed to college life that will help them decide their college and career in the future.”
The participants of the Elocution Competition showed perfect nuances and finer points that go into making a public speech interesting and captivating. The poise, self-confidence and praiseworthy articulation delivered by the speakers with uncommon sense of conviction, made the event a benchmark for the fellow students, also providing utmost satisfaction and pride to the teachers. Mrs. Thresa Bosco, one of the judges at the elocution competition remarked, “The freedom of choice of topic was something new to me. The discipline was excellent.”
The vocals (singing) competition in the Juniors and Seniors group is the highlight of Bosco Kala Utsav eagerly awaited by both students and teachers. The program is gratefully received by all as the singing of the children transports them from the mundane of daily events to the realm of tranquillity. Every singer was enveloped in his own new space, belting out the song of his choice to the best of his ability.
To develop the artistic skills among the students, an Inter-House Art competition was organised for the children of grades 5 to 8 on topics related to environment-Save Water, Save Trees etc. Students displayed great enthusiasm and artistic spirit during the competition. The Art experts were all praise for beautiful art by the artistic and creative talent of the school.
A talent hunt competition was also organised which serves as a platform for showcasing the inner creativity and skills of students who try their hand at music, art and games ranging from playing musical instruments, beat boxing, solving the rubik’s cube etc. The Spell bee and Quiz competitions were the other engaging activities of the day that kept the children thinking, guessing and learning all the time.
The Bosco Kala Utsav festival was a success thanks to a well organised Committee, a supportive Student Council and the cooperation of staff and students. The festival that arouses enthusiasm and a sense fulfilment will remain one of the most rewarding experiences in the lives of Boscoites.
