BIS MEDIA WORKSHOP A STEP TOWARD BUSTING FAKE NEWS

A two-day Don Bosco Media workshop for Bosco Information Service (BIS) correspondents of the Salesian Province of Mumbai was organized at the Don Bosco Provincial House, Matunga, on 18th and 19th July, 2018. Over 70 Salesian educators, staff and students from various parts of Maharashtra attended the workshop. The renowned speakers were Fr. C.M.Paul, Fr. Joaquim Fernandes, Mr. Ashley D’mello, Fr. Christopher George, Mr. Brian Martins, and Mrs. Karen Laurie. The workshop was conducted to train teachers and students to report on BIS and to lay emphasis on presenting truth while reporting along with relevant photographs.
Day one. The workshop began by welcoming the Chief Guest, Fr. Peter Gonsalves,core team founder of Bosco Communication (BOSCOM),1993. After the lamp was lit by the dignitaries, silence was observed to pray for the soul of Fr. Jude DMello who passed away that morning. Fr. Peter in a nutshell explained the foundation laid for BOSCOM after which the song -Every Tiny Star that Twinkles in the Night Sky – composed by Fr. Peter himself was played.
How to recognize a fake news story? A session on this topic was conducted by Fr. C.M. Paul through a video clip. Next, Fr. Joaquim Fernandes highlighted the mission of the Salesian Social Communication System and helped the participants understand the organizational chart. This was followed by a tea break.
Mr. Ashley DMello exposed those present to News Gathering and Interviewing. News reports were handed out for the participants to analyze. He invited the candidates to form pairs and interview each other for 15 minutes. Lunch followed.
The post lunch session by Fr. Christopher George on Social media and fake news was an interactive one. Digital Photography was delivered by Mr. Brian Martins. The last session followed by tea break was different. Mrs. Karen Laurie from Canada connected with the audience via Skype and explained the guidelines to be followed while writing a BIS report, and the importance of the 5 Ws.
The participants enthusiastically entered into day two. Fr. Joaquim welcomed those present. A show of hands to check assignments done was taken. A short video entitled Legacy of Don Bosco was presented. Mr. Bosco Rodrigues brushed up the participants on Public speaking skills. Next Mr. Philip Varghese discussed the pros and cons of The Life of a News Reporter. Fr. Joaquim and Mr. Bosco Rodrigues helped demonstrate the conduct of an interview with the help of two participants.
Mr. Brian Martins stressed on the essential needs of having a good photograph and the participants were encouraged to capture good photographs for their report, post lunch.
After a hearty lunch, the candidates were taken to the Tej Prasarani studio, where voice recording is done. Next Mr. Brian Martins threw light on Digital photography which was a hands on experience for the members around. The session helped the candidates to understand that size and clarity matters when we upload pictures on the website along with the report.
