Scholastic Reading Session
-Ms. Kashmira Rodrigues and Ms. Sydelle Mascarenhas
Reading of books is a pleasure. It has a joy of its own. Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body. Thus the most wholesome hobby which should be acquired as early in life as possible was well explained at the Scholastic Reading Session conducted by Ms. Jyotsna Singh from Scholastic India on July 5, 2019 in the Conference Hall for the staff of the Primary Section and English faculty of the Secondary Section (Stds.5and6).
Ms.Jyotsna Singh introduced the reading programme for this academic year 2019-2020 and also presented various reading books to the staff members at the session. She enlightened the staff on the methods which could help students to connect the content to their interest and develop a flair for reading. Each teacher received a copy of the story book that every child in the classroom would receive to read in the first term. Books such as Moin and the Monster, school stories and Helen Keller were also introduced. Teachers were given specific chapters and were asked to present on how they would conduct a reading class for the students. Information about the use of the Reading Journal was also provided.
The session was thus very interactive session as the teachers shared their views on how they would conduct a reading session in their respective classes. Ms. Jyotsna stressed on dealing with vocabulary, phonics, de-coding of words, showing images, songs, conducting quiz, group activities, asking of un-expected questions that would help to keep the students engaged in reading and finding answers. The program ended motivating the staff to read and make the reading sessions more creative and purposeful for the students.
