Fun with fractions – Std IV

Ms. Janessa Monteiro

“We live but a fraction of our lives”, the words of Henry David Thoreau. A fraction (from Latin fractus, which means “broken”) represents a part of a whole or, more generally, any number of equal parts. When spoken in daily life, a fraction describes how many parts of a certain size there are, for e.g. one-half, four- fifths, three-quarters. To make the concept more clear, the students of STD – IV had their ‘Fun with Fractions’ day on 11th December, 2017. The teachers had asked the children to get their own snacks e.g. sandwich, pizza, donut, chapati, paratha, etc and cut them into pieces of 2,4,6 or 8 so as to arrive at a practical knowledge of parts of a whole/fractions. The teachers conducted various activities in their classes to explain to the children more about fractions. These activities included videos on fractions and solving of worksheets related to fractions. It was indeed a memorable and enjoyable learning experience on fractions for the students of Std IV.
