20 September, 2016
-Ms. Vailena D’Souza
The 17th of September 2016 was a red letter day for Don Bosco Primary School, Matunga, as the staff of the Pre-Primary and Primary assembled in the staff room for a very special reason and more so for an exceptional person. It was the grand farewell to our dear head teacher of the Primary section, Mrs. Winifred Fernandes, who after a glorious 25 years’ innings at Don Bosco Primary School, Matunga was bidding Au Revoir!
This farewell was attended by members of the management; Mrs. Beatrice A.H.M. of the secondary section; the newly appointed Head Teacher, Ms. Griselda Fernandes; Mrs. Shoba the K.G. Supervisor; teachers of the Pre-Primary and Primary sections and the non-teaching staff. The program was a fitting tribute to the joyful, ever green ever smiling and energetic ”Winifred”. The head teacher was crowned as the best head teacher, besides being showered with symbolic gifts, card, address, gift and bouquet of flowers.
Change is the only constant, and as the outgoing Head Teacher got ready to leave, the Primary staff geared itself to welcome the very genial, Ms.Griselda Fernandes, as its new head. Ms. Griselda joined Don Bosco, Matunga, in the year 1991; hence this day/year marked a triple celebration for her — her birthday, celebration of 25 glorious years of dedicated service, and of course, the cherry on the cake being her appointment as the new Head Teacher of the Primary Section. Hence, it was but fitting that such a milestone be lauded and celebrated. On 1st September,2016, the day she assumed office, a prayer service and birthday celebration was held as part of her investiture ceremony at the morning assembly. The previous day, the teachers enthusiastically decorated her office and staffroom. The next morning, she was warmly welcomed by the Vice-Principal, Fr. Roy Noronha along with the staff members.
The formal investiture ceremony took place on 1st September evening in the staff room. It comprised the reading of a passage from the Holy Bible by the Principal, Fr. Bernard Fernandes, and then a hymn as response; this was followed by reflection and blessing by the Rector, Fr. Wilfred D’Souza. The ceremony culminated with the cutting of the cake, and presentation of a bouquet of flowers to Ms. Griselda by Ms.Beatrice and Ms.Shoba
The felicitation program that followed had some surprise elements – the presentation of numerous unique and humorous birthday gifts with an underlying message. A musical ambience was suitably created by the music master, Sir Saby, whose music had everyone`s feet a-tapping, that led the teachers spontaneously to the dance floor!
Truly a memorable ending for Ms. Winifred; and an equally cherished beginning for Ms. Griselda!
