The 9th of June marked a new beginning of the scholastic year 2016-17 as the Pre-Primary and Primary staff of Don Bosco Matunga cheerfully mingled with the staff of Salesian schools after a relaxing summer break. Over 157 Teachers from six Don Bosco Schools, viz. Don Bosco Matunga, St. Joseph’s Wadala, Don Bosco Borivli, Dominic Savio Andheri, Don Bosco Naigaum and Don Bosco Nerul congregated at Don Bosco, Borivili, to attend a workshop on ‘Let Learning be Joyful.’ The day began with lighting of the lamp and a key note address by the Rector stating why some students languish unmotivated at school counting the days until summer vacation whereas others are so motivated that they can scarcely stand the thought of being away from school. The new challenges that we face in the 21st century necessitates a systemic change towards a model of holistic learning that is experiential and linked to real-life situations. The resource persons kept the teachers on their feet with various action songs, games, puzzles related to their syllabus and co-related the subjects taught in school. They helped the teachers understand that the list of things students can create across the curriculum is virtually limitless and learning outside classroom helps to reinvigorate and rejuvenate their learning. In the second part of the session groups were formed and teachers prepared charts, posters, models, conducted role-play etc. The work done by the various groups were displayed. The teachers had a good experience of making education a joyful experience and understood well what happens inside schools has a deep and lasting effect on the mind-sets that children develop toward lifelong learning.
